Astra to transmit Linkin Park concert live in Ultra HD

Satellite operator SES has teamed up with electronics manufacturer Samsung to transmit the concert of US rock band Linkin Park from the O2 World arena in Berlin on November 19, 2014 from 21.00 CET live in Ultra HD on Astra (19.2 degrees East).

The sold-out concert which will be covered by 10 Ultra HD cameras can be received unencrypted on the Astra Ultra HD showcase channel on the frequency 10.994 GHz H (SR 22,000, FEC 5/6).

The 4K live signal will be transmitted with a data rate of 35Mbps. SES Platform Services, the technical services subsidiary of SES, will manage encoding of the content.

With Samsung Ultra HD TV sets from 2014, DTH satellite households will be able to receive the concert through the integrated DVB-S2 digital tuner and HEVC decoder; no additional devices are required. 20 different models are currently available at retailers. Samsung Ultra HD TV sets from 2013 can be upgraded through the Ultra HD Evolution Kit.

“We are honoured that Samsung has chosen to work with SES to broadcast a live concert exclusively on our demo channel, as this demonstrates Samsung’s faith in our satellites and our technical capabilities,” said Ferdinand Kayser, CCO at SES. “The successful broadcast of a live concert will mark another milestone in the development of the Ultra HD ecosystem and power the way for more live content to be broadcast live via satellite in the coming years.”
